Tap to Pay on iPhone

What you need

• An iPhone XS or laterWith iOS up to date, a passcode, location turned on and internet.
• The TonoLab app for iPhoneSigned in to your salon's account. Payments are taken from the app's till.
• A Stripe account for the salonStripe processes the payment. The money goes straight to that account.
• The administrator's Apple IDTo accept Apple's terms, just once.

How to set it up

It’s done once, from the app: Settings › “Tap to Pay on iPhone”.

1. Create a key in Stripe. Sign in to dashboard.stripe.com with the salon's account, go to Developers › API keys and click “Create restricted key”.
2. Give it only the permissions it needs. Write permission (not read) on “Payment Intents”, “Terminal Connection Tokens” and “Terminal Locations”. If you'll ask for a card on online bookings, also on “Checkout Sessions”, “Refunds”, “Customers” and “Setup Intents”. Nothing else.
3. Paste it in the app. Copy the key (it starts with rk_live_). In the app open Settings › “Tap to Pay on iPhone” and paste it in “Connect your Stripe account”.
4. Accept the terms. They're Apple's and are accepted on the iPhone itself, with the Apple ID of the salon's administrator.
5. Let the reader get ready. The first time can take a couple of minutes. Don't close the app. After that it gets ready on its own when you open the till.

How to take a payment

1. Prepare the receipt. At the app's till add the services and products and tap “Tap to Pay on iPhone”. The screen shows the amount and the contactless symbol.
2. Contactless card. The client holds her card flat near the top of the iPhone, over the symbol, until the done tick appears.
3. Apple Pay and other wallets. With an iPhone, an Apple Watch or another phone: the client holds the top of their device near the top of your iPhone.
4. If it asks for the PIN. Hand the iPhone to the client so she can enter it on the screen herself. Never ask for the PIN out loud.
5. Sale saved. When the bank approves the payment, the sale is saved at the till with its receipt, which you can show or send.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the money go?

Straight from the client's card to your salon's Stripe account. It doesn't go through TonoLab.

Is the key I paste safe?

It's stored encrypted on the server and never shown again. Being a restricted key, it can only be used to take payments with the reader and, if you ask for one, the deposit on online bookings.

What happens if a payment is declined?

Nothing is charged. Ask for another card or take payment another way.

What if the card is read but the bank doesn't answer?

Don't charge again: the app checks on its own every few seconds. If you close it before, the sale isn't saved at the till; if the bank confirms it later, you'll see it in Stripe and can record the sale by hand as “Card”.

How much does it cost?

TonoLab doesn't charge a fee per payment. Stripe applies its own fees, which you can see in your Stripe account.

Does it work on Android or on the web?

Not yet: payments are taken with the iPhone. From other devices you can connect the Stripe account.

Can I disconnect it?

Yes, from the same screen in the app. You can't take payments until you connect another account; payments already made stay in your Stripe.
